Bowen Therapy + Neurostructural Integration Technique

What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen therapy is a form of bodywork that relaxes your muscles and balances your internal energy. It involves gently stretching the fascia — the soft tissue that covers all your muscles and organs — to promote pain relief.

Bowen therapy uses precise and gentle, rolling hand movements. These motions focus on the muscles, tendons, and ligaments, along with the fascia and skin around them. The idea is to reduce pain by stimulating the nervous system.

This type of therapy acts on the autonomic nervous system. It’s said to inhibit the sympathetic nervous system (your fight-or-flight response) and activate the parasympathetic nervous system (your rest-and-digest response).

What is Neurostructural Integration Technique?

Neurostructural Integration, sometimes referred to as NST, is a form of deep tissue massage that works to realign and reposition various structures and tissues in the body to increase ease of movement, reduce pain and help the body function in a more efficient manner overall. It focuses on fascial release, which loosens tension in and properly aligns fascial tissue, including ligaments, tendons, connecting tissues between the muscles and the muscles themselves. By releasing these muscles and tissues, neurostructural integration puts all of the parts of the body system into proper alignment, allowing the entire body to function efficiently and often reducing or even eliminating chronic pain.

Considered a somatic therapy, neurostructural bodywork integrates not only physical elements of the human body but also emotional and spiritual elements. In some cases, neurostructural integration is used in conjunction with emotional therapy to facilitate emotional release that occurs along with reintegration therapies used by the practitioner. Stress and other emotional issues can manifest as tightness in various areas of the body, such as the shoulders or lower back. Somatic therapies help treat the physical effects of stress or strong emotions by treating the physical elements to remove this chronic tension or misalignment and to help the patient become aware of how the tension manifests in order to prevent a recurrence.

Another technique used in neurostructural integration is neuromuscular reeducation, in which parts of the body that are unable to move normally are treated so that they can move more freely and naturally. Neuromuscular reeducation is commonly used with patients who suffer from cerebral palsy to help them gain control over their movement, but it also can help those who don't have major neurological problems. Neurostructural integration can restore normal range of motion to those whose function is impaired by stress tension, tight muscles, body misalignment or other chronic problems. In some cases, where stress or tension create muscle spasms that affect nearby nerves, such as in some forms of back pain, neurostructural integration can reduce tension to the extent that patients might be able to avoid surgery for the condition. It also can help patients who are receiving other forms of treatment, such as chiropractic care or physical therapy, by helping the body adjust more easily. Neurostructural integration can also help produce better, more efficient results from exercise because it places the body into proper alignment, thus increasing the body's efficiency overall.

What is Bowen Therapy + Neurostructural Integration Technique?

Neurostructural Integration Technique (NST) is an extremely powerful multidimensional technique. It was developed to support the dynamic integration of structure and viscera, through stimulation of the central, peripheral autonomic nervous system. The technique aims to remove pain and dysfunctional physiological conditions by restoring the structural integrity of the body.

“In essence, NST provides the body with an opportunity to reintegrate on many levels, and thus return to, and maintain normal homeostatic limits on a daily basis” – Micheal Nixon (Developer of NST)

NST is a series of flicking motions that send signals to the brain to assist the brain correct the muscle form. Micheal Nixon created NST after studying Bowen Therapy with our very own, the late and great Tom Bowen, with NST based on the techniques Tom Bowen taught his students. The choreography of NST was developed through extensive testing using the principles of Kinesiology and is now a technique practiced all over the world!

Anette Ross

Anette Ross is a Muscle Intuitive and uses her combined training and experience in Bowen Therapy, Neurostructural Integration Technique, nursing, and physical training. Anette can feel what muscles or nerves are not in alignment and give you body strengthening exercises for home. She is also trained in Lymph draining for overall energy flow. If you have any body pains, booking a session with Anette will bring your body back into balance and rewire the nervous system out of fight, flight or freeze responses.
